Wassail
I photographed this year’s Wassail in Stroud in Somerset, Uk. The Wassail in Stroud is celebrated through the streets with theatrical performances and the different unique bands of Morris Dances.
The Wassail is traditionally celebrated on the twelfth night, “Old Twelvey Night’ either Jan 5th, 6th. In the middle ages, Wassail was a reciprocal exchange between the feudal lords and their peasants, a form of charity giving. Wassailers would beg from door to door traditionally their faces covered in black shoe polish & the lord of the manor would give food or a drink to the beggars and goodwill for the new year.
